Can Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 Inch Electric Drum Brakes be Replaced with 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Brakes
Updated 07/07/2014 | Published 07/04/2014 >
Question:
You mention that Dexter 3k axles made after 1999 can accept 10 x 2 1/4 brakes, is this true? I would love to switch to those since the 10 x 1 1/2 are much harder to find. I have the Dexter drum part number 008-418-02, which Dexter says is for the 10 x 1 1/2 brakes.

The reason that 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes are hard to find is because the axles associated with the Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes normally had the brakes welded onto the 2.8k axle. This means the assembly cannot be replaced and you can only get replacement parts for the brakes. The shoes, # bp04-065, are a fit for Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes.
But if the axle was manufactured after September of 1999 and the brakes are not welded to the axle but rather bolted to the axle then you can use 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes. The drum width where the pads make contact would have to be least 2-1/4 inches wide. Otherwise you would need new hub and drum assemblies and for that I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the bearings.
If your brakes are welded on then you could also replace the axle. We carry some axles, see link, but no 2.8k axles (which is what is associated with the 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes). Axles can also be ordered locally at a tractor or trailer supply shop.
