Can 10 x 2-1/4 Drum and Brakes Replace 10 x 2-1/2 Drum on Trailer

Updated 06/19/2026 | Published 09/08/2025

Question:

I have measured my current brake drum and it is 10 x 2 1/2 deep. Can I buy a matching setup of 10 x 2 1/4 brakes and hubs to replace it, or do I have to go back with 2 1/2 deep because of the spindle dimensions?

Hi Ben; the difference in the drum size won't make a difference as long as you have a #84 spindle with # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings. The # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K is 10" x 2-1/2" while the # 84546UC3-EZ is 10" x 2-1/4" and the two are interchangeable. Both will work with the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-35-SA.

What kind of trailer do you have?

Hi Ben, did you find that the 10 x 2-1/4 brakes and hubs worked well for your setup? I'm curious to know if the interchangeability helped you, as it could give others confidence when choosing their replacements.

@RobinH Yes, they worked perfectly. The drum dimension are 2.5” even on the ones labeled as 2.25”.

@RobinH Hi Robin, I currently have 10 x 1.5 brakes and hub on my 3000 lb Dexter axle on my rockwood camper. Those parts are hard to find and it sounds like I can move up to a 10 * 2.25 brake drum and electric brakes if I have the number 84 spindle. Does that sound right?
