Question:
I am seeing about an even split of opinions on electric trailer brakes for boat trailers. I now have a small truck and brakes would be more important. So I have a brake mounting plate, factory brake controller, seven pin plug, and I believe a 3500 axle. I would value your opinion on this kind of application. Also my usual trips are less than 100 mi. Total. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Wendell, so it may seem a little risky but electric brakes on boat trailers are totally safe and fine to use. People do so all the time with out any issue. Some people will unplug them as they back down the boat ramp but if you sit at a boat ramp and watch people no one does that and you never see people have issues.
The brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-35 that you referenced are correct for a 3,500 lb axle like you have and then for hub/drums you'd need the part #AKHD-545-35-K which are pre-greased and ready to install! Are you in saltwater at all?

Hey Wendell, how did things go with those electric brakes and hub/drum assemblies for your boat trailer? Did they give you the stopping power you were hoping for with your small truck? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar trailer.
