Hey, Jeff!
I went out to our warehouse to check on this for you. There wasn't a way to keep it compressed but I did get the length from the ball socket to the end of the cylinder and it was 8" long. The ball sockets on the Taylor Made Marine Gas Strut part # 3691895-10 are 1" in diameter so compressed the length from ball socket to ball socket is going to be 9" in total length.
Where are you needing to use the gas strut on?
