Is Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount Good Choice for Towing Scamp Trailer

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 01/09/2026

Question:

I have a mid-size Chevy Colorado 4WD that will be towing a Scamp 16 Travel Trailer: Tongue Weight 175 to 250 LBS and GVWR 3,500 LBS. The top of my 2 hitch to ground 18 to level ground. Scamp Trailers recommend you have the biggest hitch available with a 2” ball installed on your vehicle. They recommend Ball Height, top of ball to ground to be 21. I realize I could go with a less beefier ball mount but I like the Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with 2” ball Hitch - 4 /Rise -10,000 lbs or 12,000 lbs. I like the Blue Ox flexibility. Your feedback would be appreciated. Could you please provide a link to the recommended 2” ball lubricant and locking hitch pins?

Hey Jim, the Blue Ox adjustable ball mount part # BLU74HR that you referenced would be a really great option that would give you room to grow if you ever need to tow a different trailer in the future but also will work well with the trailer you have currently. This will provide the correct amount of rise/drop you'd need currently as well. Most likely you'll need right at 1 inch of rise based on what you mentioned. Then for a lock set that locks the hitch pin and the ball mount platform you'd want the part # IR86FR.

You'd want a white lithium grease for the hitch ball as well with the part # 58117.

Hey Jim, how did the Blue Ox adjustable ball mount work out with your Scamp trailer setup? Did the white lithium grease and lock set do the job for you? Your update could make it easier for the next person towing a similar trailer.
