Do You Have to Use a Splice Connector or Can I Cut and Splice Wires When Installing 7-Way Part 37185

Question:
I recently purchased #37185 and a prodigy brake controller , my questions are , when installing the 37185 I want to make sure it is ok to follow the details under Ford installation for a factory 4 flat to 7 way hook up the harnass matches exactly blue and orange like the detail says is it ok to snip the wires and splice or do i have to use a splice connector behind the factory harnass ? Also the 4way connector on #37185 looks to have to have the rubber trimmed to fit into the factory 4 way connector is that normal? thanks for the help my vehicle is a 1999 Ford Expedition.

The wires should match blue to blue and black to orange. I have included a link to a brake controller install page on 1997-2004 Ford trucks and vans that should be pretty helpful. You can snip the wires and splice instead of using a Scotch-Lock type connector.
The 4-Way has a rubber cover that can be used cover the the factory connector, but if it does not fit it can be cut off. You also have the option of cutting the 4-Way connectors off and splicing the wires together for a more permanent installation.
