Will Gen-Y Nomad Gooseneck Pin Box With On Flatbed Truck With Recessed Gooseneck Ball?

Updated 12/30/2025 | Published 12/21/2025

Question:

Hi guys. I’ve got a 2003 ford f250 four wheel drive short bed truck. 6 and three quarter bed. It’s a flat bed so it sits up higher than a normal bed. It does have a recessed goose ball and my camper has lippert 1621 pin box. Now the flat bed is a little wider than a normal pickup box and also taller. I was just wondering if the Gen-y Nomad would work for me. I really want to order this hitch.

Hey Jesse, cool name, and good question. So the Gen-Y Hitch Nomad 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY57ND can work with a flatbed and recessed gooseneck ball, but there are a few things you will want to check.

The recessed housing must be at least a 12" x 12" box. Also, the distance from the top of the ball to the bed must be 1" or less. As long as your setup meets these specifications, you can be sure the Nomad will work.

The # GY57ND you mentioned is exactly the right model for replacing the Lippert 1621 pin box.

What kind of camper do you have?

Hey you’ve got a cool name too. I’ve got a 2014 Jayco Eagle 33.5 Rets. First off the pickup is a 2003 ford f250 4by4 with a small lift and 33 inch tires. But the flat bed sits up four or five inches off the frame. The gooseneck is recessed and the ball is close to 3/16 of an inch below the bed and the opening is 12 by 12. I was just worried the camper would sit way nose high with a fifth wheel hitch so I was hoping this Nomad gooseneck would be better. I bought this truck because my ford half ton isn’t really made to pull that much weight. My new truck has a 24 valve 5.9 Cummins swap in it so she’ll have plenty of power to pull just need the right hitch combo. Thanks for any info.

@JesseP I gotcha so the Nomad pin box is made to fill the same vertical space as the Lippert 1621 so the ride height would be essentially the same between the two. Sometimes the height can vary slightly but not enough to where swapping the pin box would be a solution for leveling things out.
