Hubs Came Packed With Red Grease - What Kind Of Grease Should I Use To Fill Bearing Buddies

Updated 07/26/2024 | Published 07/24/2024

Question:

I purchased smith wheel hubs and they came pre packed with red grease but im not sure what kind it is. Can I fill my bearing buddies with any kind of marine grease?

Hello Nick. The red bearing grease is generally a lithium-based grease. When filling your bearing buddies you do need to use the same lithium-based grease such as the Dexter Multi-Purpose Lithium Grease # DX64TR. You cannot mix dissimilar greases. The chart below will show you which grease types are compatible, and which aren't.

This is great thank you. Do you know of any ways that I could go about verifying which grease is already prepacked in the hubs?

@NickM The CE Smith pre-greased hubs we offer, like part # CE13210 come with a calcium sulfonate grease. I just confirmed this directly with the Folks at CE Smith. So, if your hubs are CE Smith brand the grease is calcium sulfonate but the color can vary.

@JesseM is that the same grease that comes in CE13511?
