Can Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch be Installed on Flat Bed Truck

Updated 12/29/2025 | Published 11/29/2025

Question:

I have a 2001 Ford F-250 with a flat bed that sits on 2, 1 inch steel square tubing and was wondering if it would sit right on my bed or would I have to cut little square holes so the 5th wheel can sit in the correct holes?

Hey Dylan, normally fifth wheel hitches like the Curt A20 part # C86DV have the rails they install in resting basically directly on the truck bed frame. If your flat bed is only an inch taller than a standard bed that wouldn't be tall enough to create issues. Normally flat beds sit several inches taller which means a lower profile hitch is needed like the # RP30054 which is about 4 inches shorter than the Curt you mentioned. Do you have a set of rails already?

Hey Dylan, what did you end up doing with your flat bed setup for the fifth wheel hitch? Your update could make it easier for others trying to fit a hitch on a similar bed. Once you know how the rails worked out, I can help fine-tune the setup if needed.
