What is Max Trailer Weight for 2017 Volkswagen Touareg

Updated 11/12/2025 | Published 11/09/2025

Question:

Hello-I have a 2017 VW Touareg with a factory installed hitch. The manufacturer stated maximum towing capacity is 7700 lbs and the maximum hitch weight capacity is 616 lbs. The wheelbase is 114 inches. The car payload is 1200 lbs. I cannot use a weight distribution hitch since the car has a unibody frame. I would like to tow a travel trailer. Given these constraints, what are the maximum trailer tongue and GVWR weights that you recommend. Any help would be appreciated. Best, Laurie

Hey Laurie, as long as you are under the max towing capacity numbers you listed when the trailer is fully loaded you are totally safe. But since typically trailer tongue weight is 10 percent of the trailer total weight you most likely would want to try and stay under 6,000 lb for the total trailer weight since that would give you a tongue weight of right at 600 lb like what you'd need. Do you have everything you need to tow already?

Thanks for the reply. I have seen several references re a maximum of 500 lbs tongue weight/5000 lbs trailer GVWR when towing a trailer without a weight distribution hitch. Do you recommend limiting the weights to these numbers to be ‘ultra’ safe on the road. Thanks.

@LaurieL I think those are very safe numbers and if you can find a trailer that covers what you need that weighs around that I think you'd be in a great spot.
