U-Bolt Recommendation for 2020 Montana with 3 inch Diameter Axles
Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/24/2025 >
Question:
My trailer is a 2020 5th wheel Montana 3812MS 40.9 feet long GVWR: 16,800lbs. I need your opinion on what U-bolt diameter should I use if I like to replace all of them. Is it better to use 1/2 or 9/16. Somebody told me that 9/16 could damage my axle beacause of the torq required by them. Wich one is the best on a big trailer like this. Thank you !!

Hey Bruno, for 3 inch diameter axles the MORryde U-bolt kit part # MR66ZR would be a really great option that will definitely hold up well. These are 1/2 inch diameter and require 70 ft lbs of torque on the nuts. I've never heard of 9/16 inch u-bolts causing issues due to required torque.

I asked you this question cause I had an issue with my suspension last summer. For some reasons my U-bold went loose, moved, and it brake the center bolt on my suspension. A mechanic on the road was able to fixed this issue so I could make it back home. Now I'm looking for advice cause I don't want this happen to me again, and a mechanic told me to change my U-Bolt from 1/2 to 9/16 and torq them between 130 to 150 pounds. I think this is too much torq for a U-bolt that's why I need your advice before ordering the parts that I need. Can you let me know what could be the best kit for me to ride securily on rough road with an heavy rig like mine. Thank you !
