What is the Tongue Weight for the TorkLift Cannon Hitch Extension - 3" Ford Super Duty Factory Hitch

Updated 09/24/2025 | Published 09/16/2025

Question:

Curious what the weight supported at the hitch would be . I want to add a swivel bike rack to carry 2 e-bikes on this 36in hitch extension u have on your website . Part TLE1636. Wasn’t sure if tounge weight is necessarily the same weight I’m looking for in this scenario .

Hello Michael,

I want to confirm that you have a Ford Super Duty with 3" receiver?

If the answer is yes, then the TorkLift Cannon Hitch Extension - 3" Ford Super Duty Factory Hitch - 36" Long # TLE1636 will work great for you just as long as your bike rack and e-bikes do not exceed 360 pounds, if you are using a weight distribution hitch then it bumps it up to 720 pounds.

What kind of bike rack do you have, and how much do your e-bikes weigh?

Hello yes it’s a ford 3 in receiver hitch. And I will not be using a distribution hitch because I won’t be hauling a trailer just strictly a bike rack behind the camper coming off of the cannon hitch.I haven’t yet bought the bike rack do you have something to accommodate 2 fat tire e-bikes preferably aluminum construction so it won’t rust? Thanku!!

Also the e-bikes weigh 200lbs combined . So your saying I’ll have 160lbs to add a bike carrier onto the end of the 36in cannon?

@MichaelB Thanks for getting the information to me, Mike. Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. The TorkLift Cannon Hitch Extension # TLE1636 is not your average extender. Most extenders cut your tongue weight in half, but this one is heavy duty, so you will still have a 360-pound tongue weight. This extender will take your 3" receiver down to a 2-1/2" receiver, and it also comes with a sleeve to reduce it further to a 2", which is great because that’s what most bike racks need. We do not have any bike racks made out of aluminum. While there are some on the market, steel racks tend to be a little stronger. The Yakima OnRamp LX Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # Y88DJ can work with tires up to 5" wide, and it has an 80-pound per-bike capacity. A nice feature is that it includes a ramp, which makes loading easier. You may be able to meet the 80-lb limit by removing the batteries, but I can’t say for certain. There are other aluminum bike racks out there that can handle more weight, but unfortunately we do not currently carry them but I am in high hopes that one day we will!
