Can Class I Curt Hitch Hold Bikes and Bike Rack on 2020 Toyota Camry SE AWD

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/08/2025

Question:

2020 Camry SE AWD Trying to decide between the Curt Class 1 and the Draw-Tire class 2 hitches. I have 2 non electric adult bicycles. Let’s say 75 pounds worth of bicycles. My rack is a Swagman Trailhead 3 but I only carry 2 bikes on it. I think the Swagman rack weighs 35 pounds. So about 110 pounds of rack and bicycles. Add on the leverage factor and am concerned the class 1 Curt isn’t strong enough. Bicycles would mostly be used locally within 50 miles of home. I understand Toyota doesn’t recommend any racks, hitches or trailers be used on my car. Your thoughts? Also would you happen to know how many inches from bottom of each hitch’s receiver square to the ground?

Hi Chris; the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11576 has a max tongue weight of 200 lbs. As long as you don't go over this capacity it will be able to handle your bikes and bike rack without any issue. The Class II Draw-Tite # 36643 can hold more but at 110 lbs it isn't necessary. You are also limited by the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle, which is likely in line with the Class I hitch.

Curt does require the use of stabilizing straps # 18050 for a bike rack for extra support. The fact that you won't exceed the hitch capacity, along with the extra support of the straps, should eliminate any concerns. Normally, I would say get the Draw-Tite since straps aren't required but the Draw-Tite has a visible cross tube and less ground clearance. Personally I would get the Curt hitch for the clean look with the concealed cross tube so only the receiver will be visible.

Hi Chris, did you decide to go with the Curt hitch and stabilizing straps for your Camry? I'm curious if the clean look and extra support worked out for you, as it could help others make a confident choice for their bike transport needs.
