Question:
Looking for some advice on a brake controller. We have a freightliner m2 106 which has air brakes and we are trying to control a trailer with 2 axles and electric brakes. In the past we have had issues with traditional brake controllers not applying enough pressure to the brakes. The truck is a 26,000 gvw truck and the trailer is a 16,000 gvw trailer carrying right at about 16,000 lbs. truck is fairly light. The trailer is a Kaufman trailer with drum brakes. What controller would you recommend and what configuration and wiring would you recommend so that we can ensure the best performing system. Thank you

Hey Jake. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90195 is going to be the best option to add a brake controller to your Freightliner truck. It's a proportional brake controller that will slow or stop your trailer with the same force your Freightliner is stopping with.
You would need to use a circuit tester like item # PTW2993 to determine the functions of the wires and then connect the controller to them as needed. The red wire of controller would need to go to the wire that sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when released. The black wire is your 12v power, the white is the ground, and the blue goes to your 7-way.
What year is your Freightliner? I can check and see if we have a plug and play adapter.
