Can 2021 Mazda MX5 RF Miata Be Flat Towed?

Question:

I have a 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF Miata with a manual transmission. The owners manual says the transmission is not designed for towing the vehicle on all 4 wheels, but it does not differentiate between manual or automatic transmissions. Do you have customers that have installed a base plate and towed their 2021 manual transmission Miatas without problems? Note: the RF refers to Retractable Fastback, meaning it is not the rag top convertible, but otherwise the same car.

Hello Doug, Nice car! We have heard back from customers who have installed base plates on and successfully flat towed a 2016 and 2018 Miata with the manual transmission. Nothing specific to the 2021 model though. Roadmaster does make a base plate for the 2021 Miata part # RM-524450-5 and according to them the manual transmission models are flat towable. I still suggest you consult your owners manual, or check with a dealership and have them confirm your specific vehicle is indeed flat towable.

@DougT ok awesome I would definitely be interested to hear what they say. We don't see a whole lot of people flat towing Miatas but it does come up every few months so I am sure your reply will be helpful for others. Are you needing the rest of the parts for your flat tow setup. We can provide everything from base plates, tow bars, wiring and braking system so just let me know!
