Is Stop Light Switch Needed When Flat Towing 2020 Nissan Versa With Roadmaster Invisibrake system?

Updated 07/17/2025 | Published 07/15/2025

Question:

I am setting up a 2020 Nissan versa manual to be flat towed. So far, I installed your Roadmaster base plate. I now want to get an Invisibrake system set up which I already own. My question is whether I need a brake stop light switch. I believe my car will be off and in neutral while being towed.

Hello Janine, thanks for reaching out. So for the 2020 Nissan Versa, the stop light switch will not be needed in order to use the Invisibrake system. You will however, need the Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400. This is to prevent the towed vehicle's brake signal from overriding the turn signal from the RV when applying the brakes during a turn.

For your brake light wiring I recommend using the Roadmaster Diode Kit # RM-15267, if you don't have that covered already.

Are you needing a tow bar? Or any other parts for your flat tow setup? Let me know.

Bought a 2nd hand tow bar. Installed RM-15267 yesterday, which got me thinking about the brake stop light relay question. Thanks for responding so quickly.

@JesseM I am a bit confused. I have the RM-15267 installed. I have the Invisibrake installed. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with the car side monitor wire. It seems that it should be attached to the brake stop light switch. If this isn’t needed, how does the RV side indicator light work to tell me the toad brakes are on.

@Janine I believe you are referring to the yellow wire for the monitoring system? That does go to the cold side of the brake switch which SHOULD be a red wire but you can always use a wire tester and make sure. It should energize when the breakaway pin is pulled or when the brake is applied. it uses that signal to tell you the toad brakes are on.
