Will The Shocker Hitch Fit My Recessed Gooseneck Ball On A Flatbed Truck?

Published 07/09/2025

Question:

I’ve got a CM flatbed with a gooseneck ball recessed down in a hitch box. The opening is about 13x13, and the ball sits about 1.5inch below the bed. Will the Shocker Coupler fit this?

Great question, Mike. Recessed balls on flatbeds like yours are a common setup, and this is one of the most important clearance checks to make. According to Shocker, this Shocker Hitch Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler w/ Demco eZ-Latch - 2-5/16" Ball - Round - 30K # SHK56YR coupler will work with a recessed gooseneck ball as long as the hitch opening is at least 12inch x 12inch and the top of the ball is no more than 2inch below the top surface of the bed.

Sounds like your 13inch opening checks that first box and with the ball only 1.5inch below, you're within spec on depth. You're good to go!

Still, clearance can get tight depending on safety chain anchor location or toolbox placement. If you’ve got any equipment mounted nearby, snap a quick photo and I can double-check fitment with you. What are you hauling? Hay? Livestock trailer?

Appreciate the info. I’ve got a 2022 Hillsboro 24’ stock trailer and I’m pulling with a 2019 Ram 3500 with a Bradford flatbed. My recessed hitch opening is a hair under 12"x12" and the ball is just under 2" from the deck. Technically it fits, but I’m still worried about whether the Shocker has room to articulate during tight turns. Anyone running this setup?

@Rick Hey Rick, I’m pulling a Lakota 3-horse with a CM flatbed (ball recessed in a 12x12 box) and had the same concern. I can confirm the SHK56YR fits fine as long as your ball doesn’t sit more than 2” above the top of the bed and your tray is squared out with clean corners. The coupler head does articulate pretty far side to side under stress, so if your chain loops or bed edge are tight, you might see some rubbing, but I haven't seen any rubbing. Ride quality’s a big improvement, especially when running light or empty.
