Can Steel Trailer Wheel Handle 65 PSI

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/06/2025

Question:

Hi, I am looking to replace the tire on my boat trailer. Current tires are 215/75/R14 Load Range C. I would like to go to a Load Range D. The PSI goes up from 50psi to 65psi for LR D. My question is, would there be any concern for the galvanized steel rim with a 65PSI if I put LR D tires on? Do steel wheels have a PSI rating? I have not come across any info or stamp on the wheel indicating max psi for the wheel unless its on the flange? This is a Shorelandr trailer with a GVWR 3740lbs. Thanks, Ian

Hey Ian, steel wheels are going to easily handle 65 psi. Typically the limiting factor is not the wheel at all and it's the valve stem. So as long as you get a heavier duty valve stem with the tire part # TTWTRTM2157514D like the part # AM20906 you'd be fine. Are you just wanting additional capacity for peace of mind?

Hey Ian, did upgrading to the Load Range D tires with the heavier duty valve stem give you the peace of mind you were looking for? I’d like to hear your outcome because it could give others confidence when upgrading their trailer tires.
