Can I Upgrade My Utility Trailer From 14" Wheels To 15" Wheels?

Updated 10/24/2025 | Published 09/26/2025

Question:

I have 6x12 utility trailer with 14 inch wheels on it. From my research 15 inch is much more common for this type of trailer. The tag is worn off the trailer and I cannot see what the specs are it currently tilt has a 205-75-r14 on it. I was thinking of switching to a 205-75-r15. What do the experts suggest?

Hello Bailey, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to go with the larger 15" tires. The main thing to consider is the clearance in the wheel well area. You want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer.

The ST205/75R15 tires are about 1" larger in diameter than the ST205/75R14. So it would bring the tire 1/2" closer to the fender. As long as this would still leave you with adequate clearance, you will be fine to upgrade to 15" tires and wheels.

The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32395 is a great choice for this. The wheel is the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern which is standard.

Hey Bailey, how did the switch to the 15-inch tires work out on your 6x12 trailer? Did the clearance around the fenders end up being enough? Your update could make it easier for the next person considering the same upgrade.

@JesseM the clearance is a little close for comfort I have about 2 - 1/2 inches around tire. I have room for the fenders to go higher. I may need to buy a fender kit also and weld it up.

@Bailey Yea that is cutting it close I would recommend relocating the fender if you go with larger tires.
