Question:

Hi I need a weight distribution hitch for my trailer. I have a Rockwood mini lite KS2304 trialer and will be towing it with a 2017 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3 liter V8. What do you recommend/ thanks

Hello Mark,

Happy to help you find the right weight distribution hitch to meet your needs. I don’t have a database that supplies specs for trailers (though it would be pretty sweet if one existed), so based on my research, the Rockwood Mini Lite 2304KS (depending on the year) has a GVWR between 4,900 and 5,933 lbs.

When choosing the correct WDH, you want to match it as closely as possible to the loaded tongue weight for optimal performance. Tongue weight typically ranges between 10–15% of the overall trailer weight. So, on the light side, you’re looking at about 500 lbs, and on the heavier end, just under 900 lbs.

I recommend the Weigh Safe True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch - 2" Shank - 6" Drop - 12.5K GTW, 1.2K TW # WS94RR. It supports a tongue weight up to 850 lbs. What I love about this system is that it takes all the guesswork out of setup. Just hook it up to the ball, open the app, answer a few quick questions, and it walks you through the installation making sure you're in that sweet spot for the best performance.

Another great feature of the Weigh Safe is the ball placement. I’ve attached a video my buddy Brad put together where you’ll see that the tailgate can be fully lowered while the hitch is installed. That’s huge! With other systems, you’d likely need a long shank just to clear the tailgate, and who wants to buy extra parts if they don’t have to?

I've recommended this unit to many of our customers, and the feedback has been excellent!

Getting ready for an upcoming trip? If so, where are you headed?

Hi Kate Thanks for your quick reply. Do you have a weight distribution setup without sway control that you would recommend for my truck and trailer? I have an older WD with sway control that I would like to replace. I do a fair amount of maneuvering and the one I have does not allow for backing up and I would rather not have to continually disconnect the trunion bars every time I'm backing up. I'm not overly concerned about sway when towing

@MarkD Sway control typically goes hand in hand with weight distribution, since distributing the weight more evenly helps reduce sway. If you're looking for a more cost-effective system that still allows for backing up, the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA94-00-0800 is a great option. Don’t forget to grab a hitch ball if you need one # C40085 for a 2-5/16", or # C69FR for a 2". You’ll also need a socket for installing the ball if you don’t have one already; # ALL643216 will get the job done. The few systems we list that don’t include sway control, like the Reese Weight Distribution System w/ Shank - Trunnion Bar - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # RP66542 must be removed before backing up.
