How do you remove the old leg from the on the awning?

To remove the old leg so you can install the Replacement Support Leg for Thule HideAway Awnings # TH33VK it looks like you just need to pull back carefully until it releases.
I reached out directly to my contact at Thule, but they were unable to give me specifics so I'm just going based off of what I can see in the instructions and what the product looks like.

What position does the leg need to be in to unluck from the the canopy? Horizontal to the ground or vertical? in on of the positions it will be locked. Pullying gently doesn't do the trick in either position, i've tried prying it with a screw driver in both positions but it would not release.
