What Bike Rack do I Need for My Step-Thru e-Bike and Carbon Fiber Bikes on Back of Travel Trailer?

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/07/2025

Question:

I need helps ing a bike rack for my bumper pull trailer. I have two step through Lectric e-bikes that weigh 55 pounds each. One has 4 inch wide tires and one has 3 inch wide tires. Which rack should I buy? I have a class II 2 inch hitch with a 350 pound tongue weight limit. I also have carbon frame road bikes that I transport with a KUAT platform rack that fits into a 1 - 1/4 inch hitch on my car. The bikes are light and I am thinking of using an adaptor to put it on the back of my trailer when I transport those bikes. It is not rated for a trailer, but for two 40 pound bikes, so I think that will be okay. If you don’t think that will be okay, what one hitch do you recommend for all of my bikes?

Hello Alan,

I’m happy to help you find the right bike rack to suit your needs. For your two step-thru e-bikes on the back of a travel trailer, I recommend the Swagman E-Spec Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # S94FR. This rack is rated for travel trailers, supports up to 70 pounds per bike, and, as you can see from the attached picture, it will work well for your step-thru bikes.

There aren’t many bike racks rated for the back of a travel trailer. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend using your KUAT bike rack because it’s not designed for the rougher ride at the rear of a trailer. The extra bounce could cause damage, leading to a bike falling off, which could result in a serious accident. I’d hate for that to ruin your trip.

Instead, a safer option would be using the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter with 2" or 6" Drop/Rise # RM-077-6. This would allow you to tow your trailer in one receiver while mounting the bike rack in the other. To fit this setup, you’d also need the Trailer Hitch Reducer # e63YR. The # RM-077-6 supports a 400 pound tongue weight and a 10,000 pound towing capacity. If you let me know how much drop or rise you’re using for towing your trailer, I’d be happy to confirm if this adapter will work for your setup.

Another option would be getting a different bike rack for your carbon bikes, as the S94FR is a frame-mount and won’t be compatible with them. If you need a rack for your carbon bikes, the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # KU84FR would work well. However, this rack has a 40-pound per-bike limit when mounted on the back of a travel trailer, and since most step-thru bikes have fenders, the wheel-mount design won’t be ideal for them.

I attached some review videos so you can get a good feel for the products before you make a decision. Let me know what you think about the racks.

Hey Alan, how did things go with the Swagman E-Spec rack for your e-bikes on the trailer? I’m curious if the setup with the dual hitch adapter worked smoothly for your towing and bike transport. Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar setup.
