Can B&W Offset Gooseneck Hitch Ball Work with OEM Puck System on 2021 Ram 3500

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/26/2025

Question:

Just finished watching the video 4 Offset Ball for B and W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitches on a 2021 Ram 2500 Video. My truck is the 2021 Ram 3500 with 65 bed. Do I need other parts than the offset ball to mount in my truck. If so which parts and any video instruction how to connect. I take it the OEM center hole in bed cannot use?

Hey Rudi, thanks for reaching out!

I think what you're saying is you have the OEM puck system with the center gooseneck hole installed on your 2021 Ram 3500. If that's the case, then I recommend using the Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # GY83XR which comes with a 5" offset - the 4" Offset B&W Ball # BWGNXA4085 is designed to only work with the B&W gooseneck hitches like part # BWGNRK1320 that fits your truck.

You can replace your OEM puck system with the B&W gooseneck, but I don't really think it's work it since there are already offset solutions for your truck - please let me know if you have something different.

You should have enough offset for turning clearance, but we also have a formula you can use to make sure that you can safely use an offset hitch ball as opposed to needing a sliding hitch:

Clearance Formula - (A + B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab
B = Length of offset (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset)
C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

You need at least 4" of clearance to be able to make a 90 degree turn.

Hey Rudi, how did things go with the Gen-Y gooseneck hitch on your Ram 3500? Did the 5-inch offset give you the turning clearance you needed? Your update could make it easier for others working with the OEM puck system.

@JonG Our truck is a 2021 Ram 3500 crew cab diesel with standard bed (regular size 6'3"), we added heavy duty bump stops and the Gen-y 5in offset gooseneck hitch. This setup allows use of the OEM factory installed puck system. Plenty of clearance between back of the cab and front of 5th Wheel. When towing we remove the tail gate and use a cargo net type gate.
