Why Does My Furrion Unit Keep Freezing (And How Do I Fix It)?

Updated 02/19/2025 | Published 02/11/2025

Question:

Our 16 C.F. 12V Furrion is not defrosting properly. It freezes up about every 3-4 days and we have to manually defrost it. Can you please advice on troubleshooting techniques?

Hey Oland, thanks for reaching out! (***Update in comments***)

Your Furrion AC is likely freezing up due to poor airflow, which is something that can happen over time. Furrion has an amazing article on how to troubleshoot their AC units that I'll have linked below, but the long and short of it is that you want to check and clean/repair the following:

- Evaporator and condenser coils
- Air filter(s)
- AC baffle (or flow divider)
- Low refrigerant
- Broken thermostat
- High humidity
- A unit that's too small for your trailer

Since you all have already manually defrosted the AC a few times I'm pretty confident you'll be able to fix it on your own. The only things that the average DIYer might have some problems with are the low refrigerant and broken thermostat - in those cases I'd say to have a tech fix those for you unless you or a friend are really familiar with that kind of repair.

I really encourage you to check out the Furrion article at this link (https://furrion.com/blogs/stories/camper-ac-freezing-up). It's written really well, and they go into the step-by-step details of how to fix each of these issues.

If you run into any other issues or have other questions, please feel free to reach back out! Even if I don't know the answer off-hand I'll be more than happy to help you find a way to get your gear back up and running!

Jon, Sorry if I wasn't clear. This problem is with our Refrigerator/Freezer not our Air Conditioner.

@Oland Ah, I see. Thanks for reaching back out. I guess I accidentally missed that part when I was initially reading your question - sorry about that! I did some searching and I found something in a forum that I think might be what you're looking for. Someone said there are 2 plastic round spacers behind the latch strike where it attaches to the refrigerator body. If you remove the latch strike and those spacers and then reassemble the latch strike it should provide a better seal and keep moisture from getting in and building up as frost. Let me know if this works out for you!

@JonG What and where is the latch strike?

@Oland It should be located where the door(s) shut and it helps to keep the door(s) closed. I believe on the 16 cu ft fridge it is in the middle of both doors.
