Hey Sharlot, thanks for reaching out!
The Yakima StageTwo Bike Rack for 4 Bikes, both Black # Y88TD and Gray # Y78TD, don't require tools in order to get them installed on your vehicle, but you will need some simple tools (included) to initially put the bike rack together.
I'm attaching a clip from the instructions for you to see how the base part of the rack installs into the hitch receiver so you can see how pain-free it is!
