Does Hughes Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector Need to be Plugged in to Communicate with App
Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/30/2025 >
Question:
Greetings! Just received my Hughes power watchdog model pwd50epow. Question on pairing it with my cell phone... Downloaded the app, which after creating an account then wants you to scan the QR code on the face of the device. I did that, and then it asks you for Bluetooth or wi-fi. At this point in the process, does the device need to be plugged in, in order for it to communicate with my phone to allow the pairing? Guessing it does, since it keeps telling me it cant find the device. Thanks much!

Hey Lee, the Hughes Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU58VR that you referenced does need to be plugged in to connect to your phone. Without power it is not able to communicate. Do you have access to a 50 amp outlet to try that?

Hey Lee, did plugging in the Power Watchdog let your phone connect through Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi? Knowing how it went could help others trying to pair their device for the first time.
