Should Welded Double Pin Box Setup be Removed from 5th Wheel Camper
Published 01/28/2025 >
Question:
I have a 2016 Winnebago 25rks 5th wheel, i purchased used. I am looking to replace the Morryde SPB72-1621LD pin box. When i purchased the trailer it had the above pin box with a popup 10inch hitch extender welded on for towing with a half ton truck. I am using a anderson hitch also. It sits too high in the front on my 2005 2500hd Silverado and I am wanting to return to original hitch. I am scared to cut the extender back off. I think it could weaken the original hitch.

Hey Gary, that is quite the setup! It looks like someone welded on a second, modified pin box to try and gain additional clearance. That is not something we would ever recommend as it will put more stress on the pin box and the chassis so getting away from that is your best option. Especially since you are using a fifth wheel gooseneck adapter...
Cutting the welds off to get that contraption off of there and then grinding the welds smooth probably would work but it depends on how well it was welded and if the welder burned through any of the pin box which would compromise it. You could just go ahead and cut it off and see if it looks okay and go from there.
Or if you were looking for an excuse to upgrade your pin box now would be a great time. I would recommend a Curt Flex Air part # LC328492 for a cushioned pin box that will do a great job improving ride quality. It has cushioning that is vertical and horizontal.
Which way are you leaning? Are you wanting to use a gooseneck ball as a connection point to the truck still?

I was thinking of replacing it with the Mr64vr pin box. Would that work and fit? The existing hitch was welded on by a pipeline welder and is welded really well. I don't think it would remove easily at all. I am still wanting to use the Anderson hitch. Thanks
