Hi Cherry,

Based on the age of your camper I assume you have an old Atwood or Suburban water heater. RV water heaters have come a long way over the years and have gotten smaller so your replacement will require a bit more work than it used to. Most manufacturers have swapped over to tankless for a more efficient system and my personal favorite is the Furrion # FR93FR.

This unit is 12-5/8" L x 12-13/16" W so you'll most likely need to nail in some boards to fill in the gap and give the new unit something to mount too. I've attached an installation video below where Jake had to do this during his install so you can see what I'm talking about. You'll want to use butyl tape # AL28FJ on the backside of the mounting flange for both the unit and the access door.

To make sure you're getting the right access door size you'll want to measure your current one and then choose the from one of the following options below for both the unit and door. You'll also want to use some non-sag sealant # 344270341437-1 around the outer edge of the access door once mounted to help prevent water from leaking into the RV walls.

16" x 16" Door # FR98SR
16" x 18" Door # FR48SR
18" x 18" Door # FR68SR

Hi Cherry, how did the swap to the Furrion tankless water heater go in your Layton camper? Did the boards and sealant give you a solid fit around the new unit? Your update could make it easier for the next person working on an older camper.
