Can The Curt PowerRide 5th Wheel Hitch Be Used With A Rotating Pin Box

Updated 11/08/2024 | Published 11/07/2024

Question:

I have a curt Powerride 30k fifth wheel hitch. I just bought a camper with a reese 20k sidewinder hitch. Is there a specific wedge for my hitch?

Hey Jed,

I spoke with Curt and they stated that they do not have a custom-fit wedge kit for the Curt PowerRide # C69VJ and that they don't recommend using it with a rotating pin box. Do you have a short bed and need to use the rotating function for turning clearance or do you have a long bed and can just lock out the pin box and use it like a normal one with PowerRide?

I have a short bed f250. Is there a reason they do not recommend it? I was looking for clearance. Will it hurt my curt hitch?

@JedQ Since there isn't a wedge kit to properly fit the funnel of the hitch they do not recommend using it with a rotating pin box. You could potentially end up damaging the hitch and/or having a gap between the universal wedge included with the pin box that can throw off the connection and make it harder to get the pin box to rotate how it should. The most cost effective option in your case would most likely be to replace the hitch since pin boxes are typically 2-3 times as expensive as the hitch. What is the GVWR of the trailer? Do you have a puck system or base rails to mount your hitch on?

@KevinC the gvw is 18k and I have a reese 30180 base which I believe matches the ford puck system

@Jed Yes, the Reese Under-Bed Rail and Installation Kit # RP87FR does match Ford's puck spacing. I recommend switching to the B&W Companion OEM 5th-Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3300 and using wedge kit # SWW-06 so that you can utilize the rotating pin box.
