Troubleshooting Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Brake Controller 7-Way Plug Coming Loose in Socket

Question:

The connector will not connect tightly to the tow vehicle. Connection becomes loose while driving. Any couplers or anything I could add to try to correct the connection

It sounds like you're talking about the plug on the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Brake Controller # TK94FR staying connected to your tow vehicle 7-Way. Is this an issue with your trailer 7-Way if you bypass the Prodigy RF and plug the trailer straight into your tow vehicle 7-Way socket?

Hey John- No issue if I take the plug from the trailer (big Tex 7k) to the Wagoneer. It seats perfectly and “locks” itself into the receiver. The only issue is with the plug from the prodigy to the vehicle- it feels like it presses up against the blades inside, but won’t actually slide over them (for lack of a better adjective)

@Justin The Prodigy RF uses a double-pin style that makes it a bit more snug of a fit. Are you able to press it into the socket any more than what would feel normal? I know that's pretty simple as far as advice goes, but if that doesn't allow it to fit then I'm kind of at a loss to be honest.

I have the same problem that Justin is describing. Even with WAY more insertion force than would normally be required on any other 7-pin plug I have ever connected, when you release the spring loaded socket cover, the plug pretty much falls out! My concern is that if it fits that loosely, the electrical connection on any of the pins could fail while driving. Poorly designed plug in my opinion.

@AlD This a pretty common issue with these units, I can definitely understand your concern. The Prodigy RF uses a larger molded plug than a typical trailer connector, and it can take more force to fully seat than most standard 7-Way plugs. Once installed correctly, the spring-loaded cover on the vehicle's socket should help retain the plug by catching the molded ridge on the connector. That said, if you're applying significantly more force than normal and the plug still wants to back out as soon as the socket cover is released, that does not sound like typical operation. Since you've already compared it to other 7-Way plugs that fit securely in the same socket, it may be worth testing the Prodigy RF on another vehicle if possible to determine whether the issue follows the RF unit or is related to the tow vehicle's connector. Let me know if it's only the RF plug that has the issue and not the 7-way plug. I may be able to get a new one sent out to you.

@HeatherA Thanks for the response, Heather. I called Tekonsha yesterday and spoke with one of their tech support reps, who assured me that despite the “loose” fit, the the spring connectors in the plug are making a solid electrical connection to the TV receptacle. In my opinion, this design goes against conventional wisdom for a solid electrical connections, where a firm fit with some obvious friction provides the mechanical feedback needed to assure the user all is good.
