Video Transcript for Review of Dometic RV Water Heater - Standard Water Heater Gas Black - DMC43RR

Hi, everyone. Steve here with etrailer.com. Today, we're looking at the Dometic RV Water Heater. This is a gas with an autopilot light running on 12 volts, rated at 10,000 Btus, and it's got a six-gallon capacity tank with a nice black conversion kit for the exterior. Now folks, like I mentioned, this has the black conversion kit, so that includes that front panel door, a couple of these expansion sides. So if you needed to fill in the gap on the sides, you would use these.

I'm gonna go ahead and remove that door. Now that door's gonna be held in place with a couple of other components that are gonna come with it. You're gonna get four of these corner brackets or corners. So those would break off individually and they would fill in the gap or make that corner stronger. You're gonna get some hinges.

You're gonna get all the screws to put this hardware on. You're gonna get some more of those corners to reinforce everything. And also, it's gonna have those two spring-loaded door latch that go through the slots on that front panel. So this is a quick recovery water heater. It's gonna provide long lasting supply of hot water, which is a small lightweight tank.

It's an aluminum tank, so you don't have to worry about corrosion buildup inside and that kind of stuff. As you can see, it's running on just some 12-volt connections because this is a gas powered. Some quick dimensions real quick to make sure it fits your space. 19 7/8 inches deep from the back of the pipes all the way up here to the cutout. The cutout itself is 12 3/4 inches tall, 12 3/4 inches wide.

Again, six-gallon capacity tank. You got your hot and cold on the back. Those plastic covers peel off really easy. They're just on there for shipping. Now from the back, this is where your gas line is gonna come through right here through this rubber grommet, and it's gonna connect up here in the front where they have this red safety cap covering that 3/8-inch outer diameter gas line hookup. On the bottom here, you can kind of see it, but that is your drain plug. It's a nylon drain plug, so that's an upgrade. It's not gonna come rust in place. And I like that compared to the other ones because now if you have to drain it, all the water's going down at the bottom and out versus some other models have 'em up higher and you can get water inside of all your stuff up here. You've got your pressure relief valve there and everything right there on top. Now I do personally question why it's pointing that way. Check the instructions and everything as well to see if you can get that twist at a different angle or whatnot, or to connect like a hose or something. That way in the event if it does have to use that pressure expansion valve, it's not spraying on everything, but I think the way it is, if it hit the side of this, it would just go straight down to the base. So I think you'd be okay anyways. Now this is CSA certified, again, 10,000 Btus. It can produce up to 12 gallons of hot water per hour and uses an automatic DSI, and that's a gas pilot that's gonna heat the water once your destination is reached. Now this will continually relight until you switch off the heater unit. Inside of this whole tank and this unit has a U-shaped flue tube that's gonna distribute that heat more evenly from the burner out to the water itself. It uses an 80% heat efficiency rating. That's very impressive. And like I said, there's no anode rod because it's aluminum tank, you know, limits and prevents that calcium buildup rather. It's got a high-temperature limit switch inside that automatically shuts the unit off, and it has an air pocket built into the tank and that keeps the valve from dripping in your cabinet. So that pressure relief valve I was talking about, a lot of times, some of the other ones would drip. You shouldn't have to worry about that with this unit because of the air pocket in there. This also features a combustion shutter adjustment. So in that, or rather when you go to high altitudes, that combustion shutter will adjust on the fly, the oxygen level. That way, the pilot light can do its thing in different altitudes. Now this is externally sealed, so it's very nice. It's gonna keep everything clean. And this is what we call an open unit system. So you could potentially, and I recommend you do, hook this up to all the wires, the gas, and kind of test it before you put it in the case. So make sure everything's functioning properly before you do your install. Read the instructions for the installation. You should be good. You're gonna need some blocking to go underneath the tank, you know, just to keep it level if you need to and support it and that kind of stuff. But again, read the instructions. You should be good. Lightweight, it's about 18 pounds empty, not too bad at all. And it uses 1,400 watts and again, 10,000 Btus capacity. And if you are looking for the white conversion kit, we sell that separately. So again, this one today I'm featuring has the black door and the garnishes and everything. If you want the white color for the finished look, you can get that separately. It's a whole another part number. Well, that's gonna wrap it up for our look today, folks. I'm Steven. Thanks for watching.

I gave a 3 since both items were to be rated together. The water heater would have received a 4 and the door kit a 2. Reason is the door corner was bent and paint cracked on a corner. Chose not to send back and wait since the water heater was installed, needed to get the front covered. Package did not look dented, but guess it could have been dropped by the shipper.

The people at etrailer are great and are very helpful. The water heater came in quickly and was a direct replacement. It seems to be working good. The only negative is that it said it comes with a new outer door but was not in the box. I didn’t call them back because I was planning on using my old door due to the paint color. That is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars

Easy installation, works great.

We have Hot Water ! We live in our RV full time so we needed a Hot Water Heater of good quality. Time will tell if this Dometic Hot Water Heater is as good as the old Atwood which it replaced. The packaging was good ! Hot Water Heater appears to be well made. No problems installing the directions were clear and it fired right up. This replacement Hot Water Heater is smaller than our original so we purchased the enlarged door kit which fit perfectly. Great communication with etrailer which helped us find the correct Water Heater for our application. There website information was accurate and we had no problem contacting a human voice when needed.. We are Happy Campers !

Easy installation! Works great!

Installation was easy, I did have to raise cabinet drawer up about 1 inch to allow clearance at the back for the water connections. It is quieter than my older (2000) Dometic and hot water recovery is a little faster.

by:

Needed a water heater and this was the best one to fit, after reading the directions front to back it took only a couple hours total to get it in my RV. Water heated up immediately and everything has run great, of course it's only been a few days but so far so good, my only issue is that there is a back order on the door cover.. so it's totally exposed to any elements and I have put temporarily back on the door that came with the RV ( even though it doesn't fit) it's just so it's not totally a open hole to the outside, hoping it is available sooner than later.

My water heater leaked and It was the old style that is no longer available. This one needed some conversion but it fit. I even made a pan to go under it in case it leaked again.
I used two 1/2” supply lines to make the connections because they were in different locations. Worked like a champ!
Had to use the door conversion which fit perfect.

This water heater was meant to replace an older Dometic model which was heavier and had a larger opening. We appreciate the new style and feel it works well. We had to buy a door conversion kit. E-Trailer was wonderful in getting it shipped in a prompt fashion. We have just a few recommendations for Dometic for this model. 1. Please provide a silver colored door conversion kit for Airstreamers. We ended up painting it with a high heat silver spray paint. Just added unnecessary steps to the install. 2. Please provide self-tapping screws for the actual unit to be put back in place. Our older model had 10 screws and we used them all, and then some. So, we ended up halfway thru the install only to find out we were missing 10 screws. None of the holes in the new frame lined up with the old model. Also, a bit annoying. It would be great to include electrical connectors to snap the wires together and include a low profile outlet to plug the new model into. We were able to cobble things together from Home Depot, Lowes, Menards...but it would be even better if these items were offered or suggested by e-Trailer during the purchase. And we can add Butyl tape to that list. 3. We also wish the door conversion kit was a bit more seamless. We screwed in the corner supports on the water heater, only to find out we needed to take them back out and use the door kit corners. Again, the product is better but the devil is in the details. Glad this project is done.

Thanks great item every thing worked out

by:

Easy install, great directions and reliable equipment. Extra shout out to etrailer.com for helping me get it much faster since what I ordered at first wasn't immediately available.

by:

Very easy to install

by:

Water heater showed up on time, it was the the right application due to Atwood being bought out by Dometic, fit perfect with conversion door.

by:

It appears just fine. I have not yet installed it, but based on other reviews im sure it will be fine.

by:

Arrived a day early... GREAT!!! MFG packaging brought the rating to a 4. The mounting flange was bent on 3 of the 4 sides, due to no additional packing inside the mgr box. The flange was easily bent back into shape.
Install was straight forward, per mfg instructions.

It's been one year since we replaced the water heater in my 2006 Jayco Feather and there are no complaints. The new water heater is working great and etrailer was a huge help when I purchased it. If you're replacing a water heater, I would read the Question and Answer section on here for the model you are going to buy. And also pay close attention and figure out if your current water heater door will work with the new water heater. They may vent in different places.

The purchasing and shipping process for etrailer was amazing. I made this purchase over a weekend to have it arrive on a Wednesday as the website indicated. There was a problem processing a payment and I was contacted several times by Andy to ensure the problem was rectified and the heater was shipped in a timely fashion. My water heater arrived a day earlier than they estimated on top of the processing issues and once it was delivered, I received an email confirmation which also included a link to documents related to the installation process

I only had two minor issues with the heater, but they do not negatively affect etrailer.com. It arrived with mounting options for the front door on the top corners instead of with the center tab as indicated in the pictures and also how my previous heater was setup. I thought it was going to be an issue as I didn’t purchase a new door, but I just moved one mount to the center position.

Second, this water heater did not come with any mounting screws. I’m sure that’s Dometic’s choice and I was able to reuse my old hardware. So just a heads up for anyone in the future.

Overall, thank you etrailer.com, everything worked out great!
The install process was easy and it’s working better than my old heater ever did.

by:

i had to replace my Atwood Water Heater again thanks to the extremely HIGH calcium content in the water where i was living in Northern California. This NEW water heater was a simple install. Everything fit perfectly and i had it going in about 2 hours. NO complaints what so ever. it works Great.

by:

Water heater was delivered yesterday. I just installed it for a customer this morning. Everything went smoothly. Tested the water heater before finishing sealing up the outside flange with butyl and screws. Heater was working great on both propane and electric. No leaks the customer was very happy to have it working again.

by:

Exactly what I ordered and it was plug and play. Delivered in 3 days which was a plus. Thank you

by:

Propane works great! The electric side not as hot water easy install, yeah right. Takes knowledge to install, which I have , the rerouted propane line was a challenge, under carriage to redo line and flare fittings , also a better description of wiring of gas and electric low voltage, I went with colors to match but didn’t want to damage unit

by:

I'm giving this 4 stars, because The water heater and door kit work to replace my leaky Atwood water heater. By comparison, this beats the Atwood by a large margin. The drain cap is very easy to get to, for winterizing.
Now, I held back the 5th star only because I've had to redo the plumbing. I know, that would have been asking too much, but I also would have gone with 5 stars, if the color of the door matched my RV. *wink*

by:

As always with ETrailer, we received great assistance and accurate information. The water heater took a couple of hours to install as a couple of adjustments needed to be made to get it into the space. We are up and running again thanks to ETrailer and Andy!

  • Replacement Water Heater for Atwood G6A-3
Hi Devon; all of the Atwood G6A models are 6 gallon water heaters with some slight variation within the models which is why you see the Dometic # DMC74FR (Gas/Electric) or # DMC39RR (Gas only) recommended as the replacement. The same is true for your G6A-3. I don't have a lot of information on the G6A-3 but I would choose a replacement based on whether your current model is gas or gas/electric. You also want to check your current cutout. If you have a 16-1/2" wide cutout you want the...
