Recommended 2-Stage Regulator for a 100 lb Propane Tank

Published 10/23/2024

Question:

Hello, I have an 80,000BTU tankless water heater that is not getting enough gas with my current set up. I have a 30 tank with a basic appliance regulator bought from a hardware store. I am upgrading to a 100 tank and am trying to find the right sized regulator. I saw in another QandA post that recommended a two-stage regulator from Camco, part CAM59333. It is rated for a higher BTU though, I believe around 150,000BTU. Will this be too much for my 80,000BTU water heater unit?

Hey Mark, thanks for reaching out!

The Camco Horizontal 2-Stage Propane Regulator # CAM59333 is exactly what you need for your 100 lb propane tank because it has the POL connection on the end as opposed to a Type 1 connector used for a 30 lb tank.

The 160,000 Btu/Hr actually means that's what this regulator is able to handle, instead of that being the output of the regulator.

Pretty much any propane system will need a 2-stage regulator. The only time a single stage regulator is needed is for smaller appliances that have their own type of regulator built in already.
