Can Grease And Dust Be Cleaned From Brake Assemblies Using A Power Washer
Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/23/2024 >
Question:
Can you use a pressure washer on electric trailer brake assembly including magnet to clean dust, oil from leaking seal, dirt etc without damaging any components? I would blow with air after to remove moisture and then apply brake cleaner.

Hey Chris, thanks for reaching out. That is an interesting question. Generally when a seal blows and the brake assembly is exposed to grease, the best thing to do it to replace the brake assembly entirely. Grease can be very hard to full remove from the brake shoes, magnets and hubs. Even if only a tiny bit of grease remains it can really mess up your brakes and render them ineffective. New brakes is the best option and it should be less time consuming too.
That being said, if you do not way to pay for new brakes and you are set on getting them cleaned up, the process you mentioned sounds like it will work great. Just be careful not no damage anything with the power washer and try to stay clear of the wiring and obviously make sure the trailer is not plugged in when you do this. I still do recommend replacing them but if you are going attempt to clean them, I think your idea will be the best bet. If you do all of this and notice weak braking power you will need new hubs and brakes.

Hey Chris, how did things go after you cleaned the brake assembly the way you described? Did the braking power hold up, or did you end up replacing the brakes after all? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with grease-contaminated assemblies.
