Should I Weld a Hitch to a Ford F550

Question:
OK, this is where I need expert advice. I have been a welder/fabricator by trade, and I am confident in my Welding. I had a gentleman ask me to weld his hitch into the receiver. I believe this gentleman has a F550. So you can imagine he’s not going to be pulling anything light. So is this better off to be welded or to be drilled out and put a pin or a bolt in? Some feedback would be appreciated. Thank you

Hello Chad.
As far as welding a ball mount to a receiver it is not necessary and will not make the towing capacity any higher. You would need to check with the manufacturer of the ball mount to see if it is recommended as I cannot suggest the modification of other products.
With that being said, I would recommend a bolt on application like the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V Commercial Duty - 2-1/2" # C15845. This hitch fits models 1999-2025 Ford F550 models. This hitch can handle a tongue weight of 2,700lbs, and a towing capacity of 20,000lbs. It would pair up nicely with the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers - 2-1/2" Hitch - 9" Drop/Rise - 21K # 325-GH-624. This way he has the option of a 2" ball or a 2 5/16".

Hey Chad, did you end up going with the bolt-on setup for that F550 hitch? Knowing how it worked out could really help others deciding between welding and a heavy-duty receiver option.
