Converting Hubs From Grease To Oil Bath On 2014 Outback 298RE Travel Trailer

Updated 10/14/2024 | Published 09/28/2024

Question:

Time to pack my bearings but i ran into the Oil bath bearing kits. I think id like to do that conversion. Seems like many choices. Can you help pick the correct ones? I have a 2014 Outback 298RE travel trailer. Ill see if i can find any info on the axle and forward that along too. Thanks.

Hey Perry, thanks for reaching out. We certainly should have the parts you need for an oil bath conversion, but I will need to collect a bit more info on your axle in order to be sure you get the right parts.

First I will need to know the weight capacity of each axle. That will help a lot to narrow down the right parts. I will also need to know the bearing sizes and seal size for your hub. You will need to get brand new bearings since you are switching over to oil. The best way to determine this is to pull a hub and remove the bearings. Each one will have a number stamped on the edge.

For example, the Kodiak XL ProLube Kit # XLPROLUBE1980KIT is for 3,500 lb axles and will fit the standard 3,500 lb axle with a 1.98" hub bore. The Hub Bearing Kit # BK2-100 is also for 3,500 lb axles. It has the # L44649 outer and # L68149 inner bearing which is standard.

Provide me with your bearing numbers and axle capacity and I am happy to look into it and make sure you get the right stuff.

Hey Jessse, I just pulled out the bearings. LM67048 and L68149. Sticker on the axle says 4400 lbs

@Perry For that you can use the # XLPROLUBE2440KIT which comes with the oil bath style caps that will fit your hub. You will also need the seals # RG06-050 since the seals that come with the Pro Lube kit are too large.

@JesseM Thanks so much. I think while I'm at it i will replace the bearings. I can just order them individually in lue of a kit as i wont need the seal. Does that sound like a good plan?

@JesseM I just noticed the seal is a typical grease seal. That will work ok in an oil bath setup?
