Can Curt Heavy-Duty Dual Ball Attachment for Weight Distribution Shanks Have 20k Capacity

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/09/2024

Question:

Hey Guys, I’m running the Curt 17500 with the curt 17132 on my ram 3500 for my travel trailer. I just brought a new trailer that has an extended tongue and I can’t run that weight distribution hitch setup because it hits the trailer tongue. I was wondering if I could run the Curt C29NR on that shank with the 2.5 shank Would that put me at the 20 K rating? I’ve also seen the Curt C45927 channel hitch’s around. What is the difference between the two is the channel adjustable hitch better than the current one that I’m looking at I just don’t wanna have to buy a whole other set up. Thanks! I’m trying to get the rating to as close to 20 K as possible because my trailer maxes out a little over 14,000.

Hey Luke, yes the Curt ball adapter part # C29NR does fit the weight distribution shank you have now and since the shank was designed for 2.5 inch hitches it would give you the full 20k capacity.

The part # C45927 is a different approach to the same thing but is basically a 20k adjustable ball mount like you said you'd want as well. I wouldn't say it's better but since you already have the shank I'd go with the # C29NR.

Hey Luke, how did things work out using the Curt ball adapter with your existing shank on the Ram 3500? It’d be great to hear if that setup gave you the full 20K capacity you were aiming for. Your update could make it easier for others upgrading to a trailer with an extended tongue.
