Recommended Winch for a Car Hauler Trailer

Updated 08/27/2024 | Published 08/21/2024

Question:

I have an electric car trailer winch that came from Northern Tools and it is my second one they just dont seem to be well made. I want to replace it and here are my requirements 1 I want good quality because everytime it breaks it is usually our on the road at a car show 2 I want a good remote control because I winch the car in 3 I want reasonable winching speed and on several of your winches it says Slow 0 - 4 FPM. Is that the speed with a full weight on it? I will assume that pulling a 3500 lb car it would go faster than 4 FPM. and 4 I want one where the drum can freewheel so that I can pull the line out.

Hey Eric, I recommend going with the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW66FR. This winch has a static line load of 9,800 lbs, has a line speed of 29 FPM, and has a free spooling clutch with a 360 degree gearbox that can be rotated so you can reach the clutch no matter where the winch is mounted.

This winch also includes a wired hand remote that will let you operate the winch up to 20' away.
