Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Bulldog winch 9,800 pound trailer winch with the wire rope and the roller fair lead. Now this heavy duty winch will let you pull trucks, vans, tractors, and other large vehicles onto your trailer. So this is perfect for gooseneck car haulers, flatbeds, tagalongs, and large tilt trailers. This has a nice low profile design, which means it'll fit easily into most custom cabinets or boxes.
The motor on this is a 5.8 horsepower permanent magnet motor, which will deliver powerful, fast and safe line pulling. And the motors lighter, uses less current than a series round motor. They do have a vent in the motor to let vapor escape to prevent any moisture buildup. This winch does use an automatic mechanical brake, which will hold a hundred percent of the load while minimizing any winch creep. On the other side, is the all steel, three-stage planetary gear train. It provides increased drum speed, when compared with the worm drives or the one or two stage planetary gear trains.
Gear ratio on this is 265 to one. Now this does offer a free spooling clutch, which will ensure nice fast rope payout, reduces wear on the motor, has this clutch handle right here. That'll let you put it into the engaged or the disengaged position. Right now, with the handle pointing up, that means it's engaged. The winch is ready to operate.
If you want to pre-spool some wire, you can just turn this 180 degrees. It's pointing down and it'll show a figure pulling out. So now it's free spools. You can pull out as much wire as you need. Once you get out as much as you need, then you want to go back to the engaged position, just rotate this up 180 degrees, and now you're ready to operate with the remote. The other nice thing is this gearbox right over here can be rotated 360 degrees and installed in 12 different positions so that you can reach this clutch handle no matter where you mount the winch.
Over here is the side mounted power unit, it includes the contactor in the plastic housing, and all your electric wiring you need. Here's your battery wires right back here that are connected. On the inside of this housing is a sealed 365 amp contactor, which will transmit power from the battery to your winch motor. It is water, weather resistant to IP 67 specifications. We mentioned the remote right here. Does include this wired handheld remote, that'll let you operate the winch from about 20 feet away, has a 20 foot long cable. Basically what you have to do is just take your three pin plug here, and there's a little notch. You just line that notch up with the pins, push it into place, and then extend your cable out, and then you can operate your toggle switch in and out.Nice wired remote. Now they do also offer a wireless remote that has a hundred foot range. That is sold separately on our website. It's listed on this product page as a related product. That would be BDW 200156, and that'll allow you to do it wirelessly up to a hundred feet away. Now the wire rope on this it's 50 feet long, three eighths inch diameter, zinc plated wire rope. It's very strong and abrasion resistant. They do use a steel spring tensioner, which allows easy rope management, and ensures correct spooling. The hook on it, you can see it includes a nice three-eighths inch size steel hook, and even this red nice nylon hand saver strap is included. Now on the hook itself, you can see does have this nice keeper to keep it attached. The wire rope comes through this nice heavy duty compact roller fairly. You can see it has four steel rollers, two horizontal, two vertical, and that'll help reduce the friction and wear on the rope. So as the wire rope goes through there and goes up against these rollers, it'll help it move along. No wear on the wire rope. Has a silver zinc plated finish to help resist corrosion. Now you can see the steel mounting plate at the bottom here, and the hardware comes with it. So I'll include it. Let you mount the winch and the fairly to the trailer deck or the frame. This winch has a nice durable black powder coat steel body, and motor to help resist corrosion. The Dacromet plated motor tube will resist internal corrosion. The tie bars right here, and the side frames help create a nice, strong, rigid winch body. Now it does come with this nice installation manual to describe how this all gets put together, and how it installs. A few specs on this, the rate of the line pole with just a single layer of wire rope around the drum, the static load would be 9,800 pounds. Rolling load is 90,000 pounds. The motor we mentioned is a 12 volt DC motor. The line pull at zero pounds. The power draw would be 51 amps. Line speed is 29 feet per minute. A line pull at the maximum 9,800 pounds. Your power draw is going to be the 365 amps, and the line speed is about five and three quarters feet per minute. The battery wires I showed you earlier that are attached back here, these are wire size of one gauge, and the lead length on them is six feet.Last thing I want to do is there should be some overall dimensions on this winch. The weight of it is about 77 pounds. The length from this end to this end, it's going to be right at about 21 and a half inches long. The width of it would measure from the front of the fairlead to the back of the mounting plate. You're going to be right about 10 inches wide and the height, the tallest point is where this handle is. So if we sort of go from here to the top of the handle, it's going to be right about eight inches tall, but that should do it for the review on the Bulldog winch, 9,800 pound trailer winch with the wire rope and the roller fair lead.
