Can a Weight Distribution Hitch Be Used W/ a Class I Hitch

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/09/2024

Question:

last year we purchased a 2020 XC60 Volvo inscription and we told the salesman that we wanted to put a hitch on it as we were looking for a small travel trailer. We were told that in order to keep the warranty from being voided we needed to have Volvo put on the electric hitch. We did so but it takes a 1 1/4inch receiver. We are looking at a 2024 Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17 FD, dry weight of 2600 lbs and tongue weight of 320. Our Volvo has a towing capacity of 3500 and tongue weight of 350. The trailer dealer recommended a weight distribution kit but they only come in 2inch receivers. Can we pull that small trailer with the Volvo 1 1/4inch hitch? Do we need the weight distribution kit? thanks Philip

Expert Reply:

Philip, you could technically tow your trailer based off of your vehicle's towing capacity and the weight of the trailer, but weight distribution hitches are only available for class III hitches or higher, so you wouldn't be able to use one with your current hitch. You'd just need a ball mount # C45147, and you'll be all set to go.

Hey Philip, how did things go towing your Bushwhacker Plus with the ball mount setup? Your experience could help others trying to tow a small trailer with a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

@JoshB Hi Josh, It didn’t go. Without the ability to use stabilizer bars wee did not purchase the trailer. Thanks for reaching out Philip
