Should I Put Heavier Rated Axles On My 2022 Forest River EVO Travel Trailer?

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/09/2024

Question:

I have a 2022 27 Forest River EVO travel trailer and just had to have the axle repaired because it bent and the camber on the right rear was way off. I was told these are 3000 lbs axles and I see the dry weight is 6000 lbs. should i look into putting a larger weight axle under the trailer? Thank you Rodney D

Hello Rodney. Usually when an axle bends like that it is the result of an impact. It is pretty typical for trailer manufacturers to use axles that are slightly underrated for the trailer. The reasoning behind this is that generally 10%-15% of the weight of the trailer is on the tongue or on the hitch, so the axles are not necessarily bearing the full weight of the trailer. Because of this, a lot of folks choose to put heavier rated axles on aftermarket.

If the current axle setup has two 3,000 lb rated axles, I do not expect the same thing to happen with it getting bent unless you impact something that causes damage. A heavier rated axle may reduce the possibility of damage. So if you are looking for new axles, a 3,500 lb axle or even 4,000+ lb axle might be better suited for your trailer.

The big thing to keep in mind when replacing axles is the hub face length. We will want to match that up as well as the spindle size or bearing sizes to be sure everything will work together. We may have an axle option for you, and if you can tell me the hub face length of your axle I am happy to look into it and see what we can do.

Hey Rodney, did you get a chance to measure the hub face length on your trailer’s axle? Once you have that, I can help narrow down which heavier-rated axle would be the right match. Let me know what you find so we can see what fits best.
