Restoring A Boat Trailer And Looking For Bearing With 3/4" ID Bearing And 1-1/4" ID Bearing

Updated 07/25/2024 | Published 07/23/2024

Question:

I’m restoring a boat trailer and need a bearing kit. It’s a tapered spindle with 3/4” ID outer bearing and 1 1/4” ID inner bearing and 1 1/2” ID seal. The boat is 14’ aluminum fishing boat not very heavy. Can you recommend a bearing kit for a five stud hub. Thanks

Hello Dan, those a definitely some uncommon bearing sizes. It sounds like this trailer is pretty old and uses bearing sizes that are basically obsolete. We do have the Timken # TMK83VR bearing that has a 3/4" ID. This bearing is generally used on agricultural equipment or on certain older Ford or Dodge axles.

There are several bearings that have a 1.25" ID like the Timken # TMK55VR. The problem is not one of these bearings are really a match for the 3/4" ID bearing. So, there is not a kit that contains both these sizes.

Since this axle is so old, your best bet at this point will be to either have the spindles replaced or replace the axle entirely. Spindles can be tricky since installation requires specific precision equipment. Replacing the axle is generally much easier. If you want to look into it, I will need to know the weight capacity, and hub face length of the current axle. Feel free to drop that info in the comments below and I am happy to look and see what options we may have for you.

Hi Jesse, anything wrong with pairing the 3/4” and 1 1/4” bearings that you have separately? And, is there a seal available?

@Dan The # TMK83VR race has an outer diameter of 1.781" and the # TMK55VR race has an outer diameter of 2.328" so as long as this is correct for your hub, yes, they can be used together. Generally, we like to get the numbers from each bearing to confirm the correct sizing. Did you notice a number on the edge of each bearing? If you can give me that I can definitely shed more light on your options.

3/4” is #LM11949 Timken 1 1/4” is #LM67048 Timken The 8 is hard to read but I think it’s an 8.
