Does Grease Seal in Trailer Hub Need to Press Against Bearings in Hub
Published 06/13/2019 >
Question:
Should there be any play or gap between the rear seal and the inner bearing on a boat trailer. I recently ordered a seal and it is the right OD and ID but the width of it is smaller then the original seal. When I put the new seal in flush to the hub I have some play in the rear bearing. Probably 1/8inch or slightly more. Do I need to set the seal in further to put some pressure on the bearing or do I need a new seal all together that matches the original better? Thank you

Expert Reply:
Grease seal width is not nearly as important as inner and out diameter. If the seal you have matches the diameters correctly and the bearings are also correct for the hub and spindle you are totally fine. You do not need to seat the seal beyond flush either. Flush is perfect.
I attached a link to a video that shows rebuilding a hub for you to check out as well.
