Determining Axle Rating for Early 2000s Enclosed Trailer
Updated 07/22/2024 | Published 07/07/2024 >
Question:
I have a 6x10 haulin enclosed trailer I am refurbishing, built in the early 2000s. I contacted them and they didn’t have any axle information on my trailer. I have found that it is a Dexter axle. I am assuming it is a 3500lb axle, but how else could I verify what axle it is?

Hey Matt,
There are a couple ways you can still identify the weight rating of your axle if you can't find any info on the frame or on the axle itself. The first is to simply take a quick measurement of the axle's tube diameter. Almost always, if you measure a 2-3/8" axle diameter, you're looking at a 3,500 pound rating. The larger 3" diameter axles will typically be higher rated between 5,200 and 7,000 pounds.
The other, more intensive method, is to pull one of the hubs and check for bearing numbers. This is a really accurate way to do it and if you can send me the numbers you find I can tell you what size axle you have.
I have attached a full article on example this subject that you can read through as well.
