Question:
I have a Mazda cx5 2020. I already have a tow hitch and 7 way connector installed that is working and controls the trailer brake lights and turn signals. The trailer is a 1965 Scotsman camper about 1200 pounds. Will this brake controller work with my set up? Do I need any additional adapters? Thank you, Scott

Hey Scott,
The Tekonsha POD Trailer Brake Controller # 39523 along with the universal harness # 20127 would work with your 2020 Mazda CX-5. The wire harness is going to need to connect to the cold side of the brake light switch, which can be found by testing the wires coming from the brake pedal for the one that only has power when the pedal is depressed.
If you can't find the cold side of the brake light switch or don't feel comfortable splicing into it then you can also just install a stop light switch kit # RM-751000 and use it for the braking signal.
You'll also want to pick up a circuit breaker for the power wire to the battery. You'll need a 20 amp breaker # 9506P if trailer has 1 or 2 axles with brake assemblies or a 30 amp # 38630 if between 3 and 4 axles with brake assemblies.
I will say that with this being a time-delayed brake controller it will be a less comfortable ride because it's hard to fine tune the brakes sensitivity and timing. A proportional controller like the Primus IQ # TK90160 would give you braking in proportion to how hard and fast you depress the brake pedal for a faster and more fine tuned response.

Hey Scott, how did things go with the Tekonsha POD brake controller on your CX-5 and Scotsman camper? Did the wiring to the brake light switch or the stop light switch kit work out smoothly? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar trailer.
