Why are tandem axles on trailers connected with the center link, why not just mount two axles independently?

Hello Randall, that is a good question. To sum it up, the equalizer allows both axles of a tandem or triple axle setup to bear the full weight of the trailer equally, hence the name.
Lets say you had a tandem axle trailer with two independently mounted axles. Now say you go over a bump or elevation change. Without an equalizer, one single axle would be taking on most of, or the entire weight of the trailer for a brief second. This would immediately overload the axle and likely cause irreparable damage due to the excessive stress put on it. With the axles mounted separately you would not get far as things would fail fairly quickly. Mounting two axles independently does not combine the weight capacity like it does with an equalizer. The equalizer allows the full weight of the trailer to be equally distributed between both axles at all times. The design is quite simple really, but still a very effective suspension design that has not changed hardly at all over the years.
