Why Would Properly Inflated Trailer Tire Wear Out Centers
Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/11/2024 >
Question:
Ive just replaced all four tires on the trailer. Info on the tires said to fill to 80 psi cold. I did just that and wore the center tread out on all 4. Ive got the new tires set at 75. Is this okay to travel with?

Hey Robert, so traditional tire knowledge would definitely say that you have your tires over inflated and that's why the centers wore out and you should deflate a bit to prevent that. Trailer tires are different though and unless otherwise stated (basically only Goodyear Endurances) officially we have to recommend you always go with max pressure when cold so as to prevent failure from heat build up and reduced capacity. So if it was me I would go with a lighter rated tire next time than what you have now so that you could have a lower max pressure rating you can abide by since it sounds like your trailer is pretty light relative to your tire capacity...OR you are trying to use too wide of a tire on your rim width and it's rounding the top of the tire.

Hey Robert, how did things go after you adjusted your trailer tires to 75 psi? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance tire pressure and tread wear on similar setups.
