Will Timbren SES # TDR3500 Help With Sag And Ride Quality For A 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually 4x4

Updated 06/11/2024 | Published 06/02/2024

Question:

Hello. This Wes. Thinking about getting the TDR3500 for my 2001 Dodge RAM3500 4x4 dually to address the slagging issue when I hook up our 35’ 5th wheeler. Getting tired of adjusting headlights. How much of a leveling improvement can I expect? Also I hope they will make some improvement around town with the truck unloaded or partially ? Currently we feel most bumps. Between these and new shocks Bilstein i hope to the smooth out a bit. Thanks. Wes

Hey Wes,

The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR3500 would make a significant difference with sagging and would add a bit of cushion to the suspension. With this being rated for 6,000lbs my only concern is that your unloaded road quality could potentially be a bit rough. Timbrens are known for being great at load lifting but they make them such a high capacity that they won't compress as easily so when you hit a bump the axle will hit the spring and it can be annoying.

Adding in some good shocks can help minimize the bumpiness though and get the ride quality back to something enjoyable.

Hi Kevin. Thanks for the reply. The truck suspension is stiff as it is and doesn’t soften up until there’s at least several hundred pounds in the bed. Even then it’s rarely bottoms out. I put Bilstein 4600 shocks in at all corners to help smooth the ride out. Got the Timbrens bags installed with1.5” of space before the stop. Won’t know how this combination will work until I do a road drive. Hopefully the doesn’t sag as much with the 5th wheeler hooked up and a smoother ride. By the way, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR3500 had more parts than I needed. The axle stops aren’t needed due the factory suspension configuration included one that appears to do the job. I sent a separate communication to Neil in Customer Service to confirm. Check it out. Again, thanks for getting back to me.

@Wes I just swapped out to 5100's two weeks ago on mine but I went with SumoSprings since I just have half-ton Silverado and didn't need that high of a capacity. Both made a world of difference both loaded and unloaded. With a 1.5" gap they shouldn't engage went going over little bumps in the road so it won't feel so jarring, but they will definitely help when loaded up with your 5th wheel. If you'd like to email me separately I'd like to take a look at the installation and can add the pictures to this page?
