How to Measure for Replacement Leaf Spring on Jayco Eagle 5th Wheel

Question:
Need to replace a leaf spring on a Jayco Eagle Fifth wheel. When I measure the existing springs with the weight of the trailer on them it measures 26” eye to eye. Wondering if I need to take all the weight off of the springs to measure again as I see a very common size is 25 1/4”. Is it possible the eye to eye distance decreases by 3/4” with the weight off? Thanks!

I would expect the eye to eye measurement to be shorter when you take the weight off of the leaf spring. It is hard to say how much shorter but 3/4" is certainly possible. Even if you remove the weight it will be longer than it was originally since they wear out over time so you need to account for that.
What I would do is take the flat measurement so you don't have to guess. For double-eye leaf springs, measurements are usually taken from the middle of the center bolt to the middle of one eye (the measurement should be the same from either side of the bolt). I have attached a helpful article showing how to take this measurement below.
For example, the # e34SR you were looking at has a flat measurement of 26-2/3" even though it is a 25-1/4" eye to eye leaf spring. If you let me know what you get for a measurement, along with the capacity of your axle, I would be happy to help you find the best replacement.
