Question:
I have a 2008 Forest River Sierra 5th wheel model F296. My landing gears make a lot of noise while either extending or retracting. I replaced the reduction gear with a Stromberg Carlson gear box model LG-179015 hoping that would solve my problem as the old gear box would twist when under a load. Having replaced the gear box I still am experiencing problems raising and lowering my landing gear leg. I can only get about six inches of movement before the motor starts to bind. Is it possible to replace the legs motor, cross bar and reduction gear is good while the trailer is attached to my truck? I believe I have a 5000 lb lift system on this trailer. I would like to increase the lift to 6000 lbs if possible. So, if I can do the leg replacement myself using the truck to hold the trailer up and in place, what leg replacements would you recommend?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Your best option maybe to replace the entire system. I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Landing Gear Set, part # LG-1. This set has a combined weight capacity of 6,000 pounds.
It is possible to replace the leg motor, cross shaft and gearbox while your 2008 Forest River Sierra 5th wheel is attached to your truck.
Replacing the motor, cross shaft and gearbox will not increase the lift capacity, which is another reason to replace the entire system.
