Question:

Hello Crystal. It is possible to replace leaf springs with higher rated springs, as long as the eye-to-eye length of the spring stays the same. That said, adding higher rated springs does not increase the carrying capacity of your trailer. So even if you were to put a 2,500 lb each spring on a 3,500 lb axle, you will still be limited to the 3,500 lb capacity of the axle.
Also, adding a higher rated spring can negatively affect the ride quality. A higher rated spring is not going to flex as easily, and this can make the ride very stiff, and you might experience more "chucking".
For these reasons we generally recommend using springs that are rated for the same amount of weight as the axle. For example, since you have a 3,500 lb axle I recommend something like the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles # e97SR. Each individual spring is rated for 1,750 lbs, and it measures 27" from eye-to-eye.
If this is not exactly what you have, feel free to send me the eye-to-eye length of the current springs (when not under a load), and I am happy to make a more precise recommendation for you.
